HOUSTON – The family of one of the suspects arrested in connection to the murder of a well-known restaurant owner named Joseph Angel Ramos spoke only to Local 2 Sunday about his "complicated" family situation.
Taylor Coyledean, 21, was arrested as a fugitive by police in Los Angeles Friday after officers found him and 22-year-old Carlos Martinez with Ramos' stolen car and wallet near Venice Beach.
Coyledean's family said they found out about it through news reports.
His parents did not want to release a formal statement or appear in an on-air interview but told Local 2 they haven't seen or heard from their son since August.
Coyledean moved out of his parents home when he was 18 years old and became what they call "a couch surfer," changing schools and refusing to return home.
They said he would disappear for several months at a time and his family would lose contact with him. But a few weeks ago the Coyledean family said they got a call from the Harris County Fugitive Division asking them if they knew Coyledean's whereabouts.
The 21-year-old was on probation for an unauthorized use of a vehicle charge back in June.
Coyledean and Martinez are now waiting to be extradited from Los Angeles to Houston.
Ramos' family said he once worked with Coyledean and Martinez. He let the two live with him because they said they had no other place to go.
Houston police recovered Ramos' body in a pond at Willow Waterhole Greenway Park on 5100 Gasmer Drive on Nov. 18. An autopsy revealed he died from strangulation and blunt force injuries.
The Coyledean family said they are cooperating with investigators in the case.
