One dead after small plane crashes into TV station tower

LUBBOCK, Texas – A pilot is dead after the small plane he was flying crashed into the transmitter tower at KCBD, the NBC affiliate in Lubbock.

The station reports that Dr. Kenneth Mike Rice, a doctor of internal medicine in Lubbock, died  when his plane struck the tower, causing the station to lose broadcasting capability and cutting power to approximately 2,500 customers in the neighboring area.

According to the FAA, the single-engine Piper PA-46 crashed on approach to Lubbock's Preston Smith International Airport shortly after dropping from radar around 7:30 p.m.

The station was evacuated, as Lubbock Fire Department believed the remaining section of the station's transmitting tower may not be stable.

It's not clear yet if other people were in the plane with Rice when it crashed.
