HOUSTON – High-profile lawyer Jasmine Rand, who represented the families of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, is helping in a local civil rights case.
Robbie Tolan, son of former major leaguer Bobby Tolan, was shot in front of his parents' home on New Year's Eve in 2008 by a Bellaire police officer after officers mistook him for a car thief.

The officer was found not guilty and a civil lawsuit was also dismissed until 2014 when the U.S. Supreme Court ordered an appellate court to reconsider the case.
"What we see right now is this modern civil rights movement where we are confronting police brutality all throughout the nation," said Rand. "Whether that's in Ferguson, Missouri, or Sanford, Florida, it's equally as important to confront police brutality here in Houston."
The new civil trial is set for September.
