Families in Kingwood neighborhood concerned about rising San Jacinto river

Families in Kingwood have to move to higher ground after heavy rain drenched their neighborhood.

According to the National Weather Service, rain is projected to swell the San Jacinto River and inundate surrounding streets in north Harris County and Montgomery County. TXDot closed lanes underneath 59 Eastex Freeway north of Townsen after water from the river spilled onto the road and covered the street.

Families who live near Lake Point Dr. packed up their valuables and moved all of their vehicles to dry land.

"Its not the rain, it's the rising water that comes after the rain that we have to worry about," said Brandon Harmon. "We've been living here since 1994, so we've gone through this every year but it is hard. We have to pick up everything, and this time we didn't get much notice," said Harmon.

His home, along with the other homes on his street, are now surrounded by water.

"Last night it was to my driveway.  Since then it's been about five hours and it's about three feet deep. It will continue to rise, as long as they keep opening the dam," said Harmon.

Severe weather has also caused major damage to homes in the area. A 40-foot tree fell on top of a home just a few blocks away from Harmon.

"Last night around 10:30 we heard this big crash and the whole house shook," said the homeowner who moved in only six months ago.

Fortunately, the family was not injured.
