Sinkhole opens up on Chimney Rock Road in southwest Houston

HOUSTON – A truck fell into a sinkhole on Chimney Rock Road near Clarewood Drive on Sunday.

Douglas Carter was standing in a nearby strip center parking lot when he heard a loud noise. He said it sounded like someone had been in a car accident.

"When he went flying, oh Lord," Carter said. "Everybody, there was several of us, ran over to him."

When Carter made his way over to the street, he saw a five-foot sinkhole in the road. A truck with two people in it was stuck inside.

"The gentleman was very lucky," Carter said. "Nothing happened to him or his compadre."

Billy Lemus works across the street and also saw the truck stuck in the sinkhole.

"We went outside and saw the truck all dismantled," Lemus said.

Lemus said he saw the truck go three feet into the air after it hit the sinkhole.

"It's kind of scary," he said.

City crews arrived to help the victim get his vehicle out of the sinkhole.

Carter said the truck was leaking fuel, so hazmat crews helped clean it up.

"We tried to direct traffic around him real quick," Carter said.

Witnesses said nobody was hurt in the accident, but Lemus said he is worried the sinkhole will hurt business at his cellphone store.

"They're going to be like, 'What if it's around these streets?' So they might be scared and not come here into the store."
