Local rising basketball star featured on 'My Giant Life'

Nancy Mulkey speaks about challenges, opportunities her height presents

HOUSTON – As if high school isn't hard enough, a new show on TLC network shows how dating and driving are twice as hard when you're head and shoulders above your classmates.

"Now that we won the state championship," Nancy Mulkey said on Tuesday's episode. "At school, everyone knows who I am and it makes it harder to hide."

Mulkey daily ducks and dives under doorways and into cars, problems average height people wouldn't dream of encountering.

She said her height rattles her confidence, but it doesn't show since she's got the courage to do reality TV about her biggest insecurity.

"I do hope that people realize it's not nice to stare and point and take pictures. I mean, they look at us like we're zoo animals, like we aren't humans, and so I hope that they get that," Mulkey said. "We're just like normal-size people but we're taller. Like my mom always says, you wouldn't stare at someone because they're heavy."

But don't feel sorry for her. What you won't see on the show is how her height helps with hoops.

The rising basketball star travels the world with Team USA and with a year left in high school, she's already planning to play at Boomer Sooner, Oklahoma.

"I wouldn't have the opportunities I have now if I wasn't tall," Mulkey said.

Mulkey said if there's a Season 2, she's in.
