BROOKSHIRE, Texas – A man was killed in a confrontation with police Saturday in Brookshire after firing shots at his brother.
The Brookshire Police Department said it received a call at 3:57 p.m. about a fight in progress.
Investigators said Roderick Burr was standing in front of his house and opened fire on his brother who was across the street at their parent's home.
Police said that when an officer arrived, Burr aimed and shot at a police vehicle.
"There are witnesses that said he fired a couple of shots, before the officer actually arrived, towards his brother," Brookshire Police Chief Brandal Jackson said.
Authorities said the officer returned fire, fatally shooting Burr. It is unclear where he was shot or how many times, according to police.
"Our officer didn't have a chance to retreat so he fired shots, several shots, through the windshield of his vehicle at the suspect," Jackson said.
The officer told investigators that he then got out of his car, came around it and grabbed his assault rifle that he used to keep firing at Burr.
"Our officer, fearing for his life, fired several shots back at him," Jackson said.
Police said they believe Burr was under the influence of some kind of substance. Officials said they do not know what the dispute between Burr and his brother was about.
Brookshire police said Burr had an extensive criminal history, mainly involving drugs.
"We've had a lot of issues at this house here in the past," Jackson said.
KPRC 2 was told Burr's girlfriend told police he had threatened her with a gun Friday night.
The officer who shot Burr has been with the department for three years and also works on the SWAT team. He has been placed on administrative leave, according to authorities.
