Police said they responded to a call about a suicide-in progress at a home in the 7700 block of Lenora Street. Officials said they arrived and Sanchez was armed with a knife. Authorities said they gave Sanchez verbal commands to come out, but he ignored them and got a shotgun.

Investigators said Sanchez raised the shotgun and pointed it at officers. Police said an HPD sergeant sought cover and fired multiple shots at Sanchez, but he was not struck. Sanchez then opened and closed the door to his residence repeatedly and raised the shotgun and pointed it at police a second time. The same officer opened fire a second time, but Sanchez was not struck.

HPD said Sanchez then barricaded himself inside the home and the SWAT team had to assist at the scene.

"After several hours of negotiations with Sanchez via loudspeakers and telephone, SWAT officers deployed tear gas into the residence. Sanchez then surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident," the Houston Police Department said in a statement.

The case will be investigated by HPD's homicide and internal affairs divisions and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
