BELLAIRE, Texas – Screams of fear of panic erupted outside of Condit Elementary School in Bellaire as onlookers scrambled to get out of the way of a runaway trail ride wagon.
A team of horses got spooked and the chaos that followed was all caught on camera. They were on S. Rice near Linden when once wagon collided with another wagon, which then crashed into a police car causing quite a bit of damage.
“The sound from construction might have scared them (the horses) or something and they just started tumbling over one another,” said Ravon Lewis.
A large group of about 50 children watched in horror from a church playground. The runaway wagon came to rest next to the curb right beside them.
A female trail rider was seriously hurt when the runaway wagon hit her horse and knocked her down. The riders are part of the Los Vaqueros Rio Grande Trail Ride. The wagons are equipped to accommodate special needs children who sometimes ride with them.
The trail riders were stopped at Condit Elementary where students were looking at the horses moments before the accident happened.
“The people and the horse that’s the important part of this thing. We can fix this wagon. We can fix that wagon. We can't fix the people,” Kent Crawford said.
