HOUSTON – The owners at Figment Ranch in Cypress believe the people who came in broke in through the back fence of their property this weekend. Once they were inside, they shot two of their llamas. One of those llamas was also decapitated.
It's more than just a passion for llamas for Figment Ranch co-owner Ruby Herron.
"These are our children, we've been raising them for 30-something years and we've been in this spot for 30 years. Nobody bothers us," Herron said.
One of the two llamas that was shot survived. His name is Lorenzo.
"He's probably one of the best guard animals in the country," Herron said.
Lorenzo tried his best to scare off the shooter by screaming, but he got hit twice.
"There was a .22-caliber, they assumed from the X-ray, lodged in his spine," Herron said, referring to the veterinarian. Doctors said it would be too dangerous to remove the bullet so they left it in.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office and the Houston SPCA are both looking into this one. Herron said she also contacted the Harris County District Attorney's Office as well. So far, investigators have little to go on in terms of leads for suspects.
"We are willing to offer a reward for any information that leads to the conviction and capture of these people,'' Herron said.
