How to survive a drive-thru robbery

HOUSTON – It’s something we all do all the time, pulling into a drive-thru to get a bite to eat.

But do you realize that sitting there in the drive-thru lane, trapped by cars in front of you and in back of you, you instantly become the perfect target for an armed robber?

It’s happening more and more in big cities like Houston.

Former Secret Service Agent Jim Napolitano says it’s happening because thieves are more desperate and are searching for every opportunity to steal from someone who is helpless.

“The assailant is looking for someone who’s not paying attention, so he can get on top of them, use the surprise  factor to take away their money, their car, and maybe their life,” says Napolitano.

Now working with Napolitano, with multiple cameras and a team of actors, we at Channel 2 Investigates are about to teach you two ways to survive a drive-thru hold-up.

Lesson One:

  • Leave at least 10 feet between you and the car ahead of you, so you can escape
  • Scan the area outside your car, so you are aware of what’s happening around you
  • If you see someone approaching your car, react and drive away, using the space ahead of you to get out
  • Napolitano says the key is to react quickly and without hesitating.
  • “It’s time to go, go, go. You need to accelerate away from that situation as quickly as possible, putting space between you and the attacker,” Napolitano says.

    Lesson Two:

  • If you have a gun in the car or in your purse or on your person, draw the weapon.
  • Point the weapon at the attacker to drive him away.
  • Drive off as quickly as possible.
  • Jim Napolitano has trained federal agents to escape from the most dangerous situations you can imagine, so he knows what he’s talking about.

He says the most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings and what is happening around you, that way you can take control of your situation and protect both yourself and your family.
