THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Patton Village police sergeant who was killed during a chase was laid to rest Friday.
Police Chief Leon Verot regarded Sgt. Stacey Baumgartner as “one of the best sergeants you'd ever want to meet. Helpful, kind, not the typical sergeant.”
"Among men, he had the most tender of hearts and if you've seen him with his daughter Chloe, you know exactly what I mean," said brother Dwayne Bryant.
Baumgartner's brother honored him for his service.
"Stacey was driven by a strong sense of duty like no other person that I've known," said Bryant. "It seems as Stacey was born for a life of serving others."
Officers from law enforcement agencies throughout the area had heavy hearts.
"Number one was God, his family and his job," said Patton Village Police Chief Leon Verot. "It's gonna take us a long time for this pain to heal, but today is the start of this process."
Investigators said Baumgartner was chasing Garrett Nee Sunday night. They said Nee ran a red light and an SUV crashed into Baumgartner's patrol car at FM 1485 and State Highway 242.
Baumgartner leaves behind a wife, 20-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.
His funeral services were held Friday at The Woodlands Church.
