HOUSTON – KPRC Channel 2 hosted a live web chat focusing on the health, financial and legal issues facing elderly Houstonians and the people who care for them.

Topics included proposed changes to benefits for Texas war veterans and their surviving spouses. A policy change proposed by the VA would affect pension benefits. Right now, the Elder Counsel estimates more than 600,000 Texas war vets are not receiving all the benefits to which they are entitled.
The elder care attorneys joining the web chat also discussed the costs of long term health care. The Elder Counsel found the cost of dementia care exceeds the cost of caring for an elderly relative with heart disease or cancer. Those costs continue to go up, doubling over the next 25 years.
The team also addressed the importance of disability coverage to prevent potential financial disaster. And they'll be prepared to answer questions caregivers might have about their own financial and physical health.
