HOUSTON – One person is dead after a deadly accident took place just feet away from Market Square Park in downtown Houston on Tuesday.
Others in the area at the time were going about their normal day when the tragic accident happened.
"Stopped the car, got around, getting my bike out and all of a sudden I saw METRO just slammed the breaks," Anthony Alaniz said.
METRO Police say the accident happened around 6 p.m.
That's when the say the bus driver, who's been with METRO for 13 years, was turning from Congress Avenue onto Milam Street when the man was hit.
It's unclear if he was in, or near, the crosswalk.
"We don't know that for sure, that is part of the investigation. There is video available from the bus. Obviously that will be part of the one of the things that the investigators look at," Dennis Ribeiro, with METRO, said.
"It's a tragedy to lose someone, especially now at the beginning of the year," Vanessa Romero said.
METRO officers say there were no passengers on the bus at the time of the accident.
Investigators are now looking at video from on-board the bus and talking to any potential witnesses.
"I just feel people need to be a little bit more safer on the streets. Drivers and pedestrians," Romero said.
