Student found with gun off campus after 3 Houston-area schools placed on lockdown, police say

HOUSTON – Police confiscated a gun from a student off campus after three southwest Houston schools were locked down Tuesday morning, according to officials.

A statement from the Houston Independent School District said that district police received reports that a student had brought a gun to Wisdom High School.

"Everybody was in fear because (it's) not every day you hear someone with a gun in your school," one said.

Police said the student was either trying to sell the gun to another student or showing it off.

Officials said the school was locked down as a precaution while police conducted an investigation, but no gun was found.

"They had us inside of our rooms for over 30 minutes after class was over and we couldn't go, because they still didn't know where he was," the student said.

The lockdown was lifted just before noon.

A spokeswoman for Southwest Schools said both the middle school and high school campuses were also locked down as a precaution. The all clear was given to those locations about 11:40 a.m.

After further investigation, police said they spotted the student who is accused of bringing the gun to school and found a handgun on him.

Matthew Schaare, 17, is charged with the carry of a prohibited weapon in a prohibited place, according to court documents.

Wisdom High School released a statement:

“Wisdom High School was placed on lockdown Tuesday while police investigated suspicious activity. HISD Police received reports that a student had brought a gun to campus, but a gun was not found on campus.

“After further investigation, police later located the student in question off campus and discovered a handgun in his possession. The case has been handed over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.”

Police said no charges have been filed and the student's parents were notified.

The case is still under investigation.
