HOUSTON – Dozens of people boarded buses Tuesday morning in Houston bound for Austin, where they will talk with state leaders about issues affecting the Muslim community.

The “Muslim Day at the Capitol” event had been planned before a recent ban on immigration from several countries.

An executive order, signed Friday by President Donald Trump, bars citizens from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Somalia and Sudan from entering the United States for 90 days. It also suspends the admission of Syrian refugees indefinitely and 120 days for all other refugees.

The order sparked protests across the country, including in Houston, and was decried by many world leaders. Australian leaders voiced support for the ban.

Houston Muslims said that the president’s order makes the already planned event even more important. They will meet with Texas leaders and talk about their concerns and issues affecting the Muslim community.

A total of five buses will leave Houston and head to the state capital.

The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a rally on the steps of the Capitol.
