Maverick, 4, dies after fight with cancer

HOUSTON – We have sad news to report. KPRC 2 has learned that Maverick Dizmang, 4, lost his fight with cancer Wednesday.

His mother, Cheyanna Vogeler, posted on Facebook, "At 9:44am Maverick went peacefully to be with Jesus. He was surrounded by everyone who loved him! Please pray for us as we finish the long road!"

There are some battles in life that are so terrible, no matter how long and hard we fight we just can’t win.

Four-year-old Maverick Dizmang is involved in a struggle to beat cancer.

“He's got a tumor crushing his windpipe. There's nothing we can do,” Cheyanna Vogeler said.

Maverick’s battle with Ewing's sarcoma began nearly three years ago.

At one point, his family thought he had it beat, but the cancer came back and spread.

Doctors tried everything, but Maverick doesn’t have much fight left in him.

“They'll turn off the ventilator and they'll keep him comfortable until he decides it’s his time,” Vogeler said.

Maverick’s mother is praying for a miracle, but wants to be prepared for what’s ahead.

She started a GoFundMe page to raise money for her son’s funeral costs.

The single mother of two hasn’t been able to work for a while and says she can no longer afford to pay her bills or rent.

“Childhood cancer is a big thing. There’s a lot of us doing it, and when we ask for money it’s not that we don't want to work. It’s a full-time job just coming to the hospital,” Vogeler said.

Vogeler has found strength and support from members of the Houston Fire Department.

“He's kind of the son I never had,” firefighter Ryan Horton said.

Firefighters found out Maverick wanted to be a fireman, and after learning about his story on Facebook, they invited him to a local fire station last May.

“The struggles they have with money and Maverick's treatments -- they are more heroes to us than we are to them,” Horton said.

Vogeler says it has meant the world to her and to Maverick. That kind of love, she says, will get her through what’s next.

“Pray for Maverick and my family,” Vogeler said.
