Health officials confirm case of meningitis at Katy day care

HOUSTON – Kids R Kids Learning Academy in Katy sent notices home with children Tuesday stating one child who attends the day care has meningitis.

KPRC spoke by phone with day care and the Fort Bend County Health Department officials who confirm the child does not have a contagious form of the disease.

Viral meningitis is the most common type of meningitis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it's an inflammation of the tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, viral meningitis is less severe than bacterial meningitis and most people get better on their own.

However, according to the CDC, bacterial meningitis is very serious and can be deadly.

Death can occur in as little as a few hours.

Most people recover but permanent disabilities (such as brain damage, hearing loss and learning disabilities) can result from the infection.

Parents at Kids R Kids said they are relieved the case involving a child at their day care was not contagious.

The little boy with the disease is recovering at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital.
