12-year-old Houston tennis phenom rises in rank

HOUSTON – Nico Trullenque, 12, is one of the top junior tennis players in Texas.

Nico has been playing since he was 2 years old and his love for the sports has always remained strong.

His passion and determination have never wavered.

“Honestly, I just love the feeling of hitting the tennis ball,” Nico told KPRC Sports.  “It feels nice and just calms me down sometimes, like when I have a tough time at school.”

Nico doesn’t have too many tough days on the court. He recently won the Grand Slam Texas Championship, which is the biggest tournament for juniors in the state.

While there, he won both the singles and doubles titles. Then on Monday, Nico captured the national title at a tournament in Mobile, Alabama.

We first met Nico and his father and coach, Alfredo, five years ago while reporting a story. Even then, Nico had some big goals.

“I want to be ranked No. 1 and also win Wimbledon,” Nico told sports director Randy McIlvoy in 2012.

Nico remains focused on achieving those goals, and right now, though he’s using his most recent win as motivation to improve his overall game.
