PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – A man listed on Prairie View A&M's men's basketball roster has been charged with second-degree felony sexual assault.
The case was investigated by the university's police department and a Waller County grand jury indicted Yusuf Yakubu, 24, on sexual assault charges.
Yakubu was arrested and is being held without bond in the Waller County Jail. According to Waller County sheriff's officials, Yakubu declined to speak with KPRC.
Sources familiar with the investigation tell KPRC the indictment stems from an incident reported in April by a fellow student. Our sources said the assault was reported to have happened near campus after Yakubu asked the female student to "come to his place" to "hang out."
KPRC visited an apartment listed as Yakubu's home address. However, a woman who answered the door said she is an ex-girlfriend of Yakubu's and the apartment is her residence.
“I didn’t believe it. He’s a good guy, I don’t think he’ll do that kind of thing,” the woman said, who asked not to be identified.
Sources familiar with the case said there is also an investigation into a second allegation lodged against Yakubu.
The University's police chief did not respond to a request for comment from KPRC.
Officials with Prairie View A&M did send KPRC a brief written statement:
"PVAMU treats complaints of sexual assault with the full seriousness due them. The university has a robust intake process to handle complaints which are investigated and processed through our disciplinary system. If warranted, cases may be referred to the district attorney’s office for handling. At the same time, we work hard to assure the safety of students and always advise complainants not only of their rights but also of the resources available to assure them of their safety. While we cannot comment on an individual case, we are satisfied that we do everything possible to ensure the well-being of our students."
According the University's website, Yakubu was listed as 6 feet 7 inches tall, weighs about 225 pounds and played forward for the basketball team during the 2016-2017 season.
