Seedless avocados are no longer unicorn fruit; They're real, but you'll have to travel to get them

(Marks and Spencer)

HOUSTON – If you love avocados, but hate the possibility that you could slice your hand trying to take out the pit, take comfort in the knowledge that seedless avocados are a real thing.

British retail chain Marks and Spencer posted a photo of the avocados on its Instagram page.

The post now has more than 15,000 likes – probably because British people can look forward to safer fruit slicing in the future.

San Diego-based wholesaler Specialty Produce explains the lack of seed is “simply the result of an unpollinated avocado blossom.”

So when will the limited-supply “cocktail avocados” be coming to the U.S.? There’s no word on that, but there is word on what they taste like.

A New York Post writer who had to go to four different Marks and Spencer stores to find the pickle-sized avocados remarked that the taste “isn’t quite the same.”

“The cocktail avocados are lighter, more watery and a bit sweeter and fruitier than their larger cousins,” the taste tester wrote. “The skin is supposedly edible, but it’s so bitter, I almost spit it out.”

The taste-tester advised avocado lovers to stick with the larger pit version and brush up on your knife skills, writing, “Americans shouldn't be jealous of the UK’s tiny fruits.”
