HOUSTON – U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley spoke Tuesday to students at the University of Houston.
Her speech at the Student Center South Theater began at 4p.m. and she spoke about leadership and global challenges.
A question-and-answer session with students followed her speech.
“I’m here following a very busy few weeks in American foreign policy,” Haley said during her speech.
Protesters quickly interrupted Haley, chanting, “Free Palestine.”
University of Houston police ushered the protesters out.
Haley spent much of her speech talking about representing the interests of the U.S. around the world. She said the world learned something from Houston in the days after Hurricane Harvey.
“We saw neighbors helping neighbors, people watching out for each other. Houston gave us all a master class in how to be good citizens and how to be good human beings,” Haley said.
She said flooding in her home state of South Carolina made her appreciate what Houstonians experienced after Harvey.
“I know you’ve been through a lot and you’re dealing with the aftermath, but you should all be very proud of how your community has come through all of this,” she said.
Haley also mentioned the 10 people who lost their lives in the Santa Fe High School shooting last week.
“And, of course, all of Texas and all of America are mourning in the tragedy of Santa Fe last week. Words alone can never capture how we feel about it. We must stick together as a nation to lift up the families,” she said.
