HOUSTON – The Wortham Theater reopened its doors Tuesday after extensive repairs and renovations were made due to flood damage by Hurricane Harvey last year.
The Houston First Corp. unveiled the renovations during a guided tour of the iconic Houston theater to showcase the new interior.
According to Houston First, the upgrades and repairs cost about $100 million and are still not 100 percent complete.
During Hurricane Harvey, Wortham Theater took on about 12 feet of water, which damaged the basement, tunnel access to underground garages, costume shops, storage areas, and opera and ballet rehearsal spaces.
“One reason why our recovery has taken so long is because of the complexity of combining partial old equipment, 30 years, and partial new equipment. The design team had to really work harder than they would on a normal job, if you will, to make those connections and to make that compatibility work,” said Sheila Turkiewicz, Senior Vice President the Theater District.
The Houston Grand Opera will celebrate its homecoming with a performance by world-famous tenor Placido Domingo.
