Man killed while protecting girlfriend during robbery in northwest Houston, police say

HOUSTON – A man was killed trying to protect his girlfriend during a robbery, Houston police said.

The deadly robbery was reported around 5:30 a.m. in the 7500 block of Pinemont Drive in northwest Houston. 

The victims were taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where the 26-year-old man was pronounced dead and the 19-year-old woman is in critical condition. 

Houston police said the couple was coming home from work and decided to park on the street since the parking garage was full. Detectives said while the man stood outside as the woman attempted to parallel park and was rushed by an older man who appeared in his 60s. 

When the boyfriend, not realizing the older man had a gun, said no to the robber's demands, the robber pointed his gun toward the girlfriend, detectives said. The boyfriend stepped in front of his girlfriend and was shot, police said. When the woman ran around the vehicle to try to get away, the boyfriend grabbed and cradled her as the gunman fired several more shots, police said. The woman was struck in the neck. 

Detectives said the gunman said, "I told y'all this ain't a game" before leaving the scene with the woman's wallet, ID and $26. 

Police said the shooter ran toward the area of Hollister and Hillmont streets.

Police described him as a black man wearing a white muscle shirt, standing about 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a thin build, weighing around 160-170 pounds.
