Houston – It’s not just disruptive. It’s dangerous.
We’re talking about cutting down or sometimes ripping neighborhood cable lines from their poles to steal and salvage the copper wiring.
Despite the apparent physical dangers and legal risks of this crime, Houston police reported cable wire thefts have increased across the region in recent years. Earlier this year, KPRC 2 News showed you the heights copper thieves are willing to climb to get this precious metal.
Monday morning at 6:30, KPRC 2 Investigates' Robert Arnold will show you how local law enforcement and telecommunication giants, such as Verizon and AT&T, are working together to deter and capture copper thieves. He’ll also share information to help you recognize criminals targeting cable lines in your community.
Houston Police Department Sgt. Bob Carson with the Metal Theft Unit said these wires are critical to our infrastructure, and can knock out internet and power for homes, businesses, and hospitals.
“It impacts the people’s ability to call 911. It impacts the pharmacy to be able to log in and assign you a prescription,” Carson said. “It’s affecting everyone.”
