HOUSTON – Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa and Houston Children's Charity set up a fund to help those in need of beds and bedding after Hurricane Harvey.
While his teammates popped Champagne and celebrated their first AL West title in more than a decade Sunday night, Correa was in bed asleep.
He was preparing for an early morning of loading mattresses onto the back of pickup trucks at a Houston warehouse.
It’s all part of his partnership with Houston Children’s Charity for their Harvey Children’s Relief Fund.
"I know there's a lot of people out there, a lot of children out there sleeping on the floor. And I want to use my platform in some way to help in some way to bring some beds to those houses and bring a smile to their faces after the horrific events that happened here in Houston,” Correa said.
Houston Children’s Charity aims to donate 5,000 beds as part of its post-Harvey relief initiative, and it began by giving away 500 Texas Mattress Makers beds as of Monday.
The YouCaring post says 100 percent of donations will go toward the purchase of beds and linens for those in need.
The fund set its initial goal at $500,000 to purchase 5,000 beds.
Texas Mattress Makers employees donated their time over the weekend to assemble the mattresses that the company donated to any family who needed a bed to sleep on.
Race Walker’s daughter’s home was inundated with 4 feet of water after Harvey, and his family was among dozens of others to receive mattresses, sheets and pillows free of charge.
"This is all about God. And this is a beautiful thing for the companies to do this for us, to show what Houstonians is all about,” Walker said.
