Cancer survivor, Emmy Award-winning TV chef speaks on BBVA Compass Bright Futures program

HOUSTON – Sandra Lee knows a thing or two about success.

The Emmy Award-winning television chef and author has built an empire and become a household name but came from meager beginnings.

Lee grew up in a broken home, overcame poverty, mounting student debt and, later in life, survived breast cancer.

Now, she’s stopping by Houston as the spokeswoman for BBVA Compass’s Bright Futures Initiative, which is aimed at helping entrepreneurs getting a leg up in life.

"It really is a roadmap for a bright future and for success,” Lee said of the initiative.

An important component of the program is a list of 10 basic principles to help individuals achieve success, one of which is to know where that person is going.

"It doesn't mean that you have to know the exact end goal. You can have little goals along the way that get you where you need to go,” Lee said.

She emphasized the importance of constantly setting new goals as well. Once someone has achieved short-term goals, they should be looking ahead to accomplishing something larger in the future.

Another principle for success: Find success in failure.

"Live it. Learn from it, and move on. Don't wallow in it. Don't let it stifle you,” Lee said.

She explained that failure can be an important teaching moment as well as a conduit to handling life’s future challenges with experience and poise.
