HOUSTON – You may have heard of the Kylie Jenner Challenge on Twitter. Houston doctors say this quest for pouty lips is a dangerous trend with potentially permanent consequences.
The videos are all over twitter #KylieJennerChallenge.
Teens are seen sucking on glasses trying to mimic the reality star's famous pout.
Dr. Sherry Ingraham with Advanced Dermatology tells KPRC Channel 2, "I feel for them because I know they're trying to achieve that look, that enhanced fuller poutier look. But it's concerning to me as a health care provider and as a parent."
Dr. Ingraham said "In the short term, you're going to have some swelling. In the long term, if you burst a blood vessel when trying to make your lips bigger, that can cause an indentation and scarring in the lips that's permanent and can be very disfiguring."
Patient Siti Yahya told KPRC, "My goal is just to have a more natural enhancement of my lips where it just accentuates my features, so nothing overdone."
Siti waited until her mid-twenties to try fillers.
She added, "When you're a teenager as you transition into younger adulthood, your features do kind of change. So I think you want to wait until you're a little more in your mid-twenties where your features sort of stabilize."
Jenner claims her perfect pout is all natural. Dr. Ingraham said it's probably a combination of fillers and make up."
She explained, "There's nude colored lip liners, nude colored lipsticks where you can go beyond the shape of your lips and enhance them with a beauty product instead of trauma."
Dr. Ingraham has her own challenge for people looking to get a pretty pout: Do your research and find an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist.
The FDA has approved lip fillers for those over 21. Those `8 and older can seek treatment with informed consent.
