Galveston sees record rainfall, cyclists stranded in severe weather

GALVESTON, Texas – Several inches of rain shut down roads and stalled vehicles across Galveston on Saturday.

A flash-flood warning was in effect in Galveston County until 8 p.m.

Quinshuan Arthur who bicycles to work had to wait three hours until the rain let up, so he could get back home. “Some roads are just totally flooded.  You can’t see the road at all,” Arthur said.

Lolita Thompson also got stuck after she realized her car wouldn’t be able to make it through the road that leads to her home. “I knew if I tried to go through the water it would probably flood out my car,” Thompson said.

Several traffic lights were also out all day, after the storm blew out power.

But the nonstop rain didn’t stop the annual Dickens on The Strand festival from taking place.  Dressed in their Victorian best, people donned their umbrellas to walk through the streets of downtown Galveston. “I’m very cold and my clothes are very heavy. It’s very wet,” Katherine Asher Jeffries said.

The Galveston Historical Foundation will hold an unprecedented second weekend of Dickens on The Strand on Dec. 9-10, due to the wet weather. Admission is free to this weekend’s events that will run again on Sunday.
