Husband, wife, family dog killed in Galveston house fire

GALVESTON, Texas – A husband, wife and their dog were killed Wednesday night in a house fire in Galveston, according to authorities.

Firefighters were called around 8:45 p.m. to a home in the 4300 block of Avenue Q 1/2, near 43rd Street. When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed in flames, Galveston Fire Chief Mike Wisko said.

“This is the type of call that every firefighter fears when the alarm rings,” Wisko said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family as they endure this tragic loss.”

The body of Benjamin Laughlin, 79, was found inside the home.

Lillian Laughlin, 76, was taken to the hospital, but later died from her injuries. The Laughlins' dog also died in the fire.

“This is a tragic loss for the family of Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin, as well as for the city of Galveston,” said Wisko. “GFD has made fire prevention and the safety of our residents our highest priority and this loss of two residents serves to reinforce our desire to constantly remind everyone of the need for fire safety.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It is unknown if the home had working smoke detectors.
