Local artist relishes chance to shine on 'The Voice' at 38

HOUSTON – Sundance Head is as comfortable belting out a tune in his backyard in Porter as he is on a stage in Hollywood.

Channel 2's Keith Garvin sat down with him to talk about his experience as a contestant on this season's "The Voice."

Head said he remembers his blind audition like it was yesterday.

"I didn't really realize what was going on until it was over and then I noticed that Adam (Levine) and Blake (Shelton) had turned around," recalls Head. "And then I was a little bit aggravated I couldn't get the girls to turn around because I really tried hard at the very end, you know."

Head has been on the big stage before.

In addition to continuing to perform away from the show, the professional artist was a contestant on "American Idol" in 2007, making it into the top 13.

He's using that experience to help him advance on "The Voice."

"I didn't have a music genre or my own voice or anything. I don't know how I made it to No. 13, really," Head said. "I realize now you have to have a plan."

Head now describes his style as soul country -- inspired by the likes of Etta James, Willie Nelson and Otis Redding, to name a few.

As a member of Team Blake (Shelton), he hopes to ride the rhythm to a victory on "The Voice."

"Really, I'm just glad to have this opportunity at 38," Head said. "To have another chance to get out there and let America see me."

Head also receives inspiration and guidance from his father. Roy Head was the lead singer of the music group Roy Head and The Traits. They were best known for their 1965 single "Treat Her Right," which made it to No. 2 on the Billboard music charts.

The only song ahead of it was "Yesterday" by The Beatles.
