1,000 doses administered at Booker T. Washington High School pop-up vaccination site in Independence Heights

HOUSTON – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, along with the United Memorial Medical Center, hosted a vaccination site in the Independence Heights community on Monday.

The neighborhood outreach site was at Booker T. Washington High School at 4204 Yale Street. Vaccinations were provided while supplies lasted and no pre-registration was required.

Local and elected officials and the Houston Independent School District also contributed to the vaccinate site.

Officials said 1,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine were administered at Booker T. Washington.

“It’s good that they bring it closer to people, especially where we live, it’s all nothing but senior citizens,” said Guadalupe Herrera.

This vaccination event, organized by Shelia Jackson Lee and UMMC, was different from others because people didn’t have to pre-register.

“When I heard it on the news and they said you didn’t have to pre-register, I said, ‘Let me get myself ready and get on down there,’” said Stephanie Doffney.

Doffney was hesitant but is looking forward to quality time with her mother.

“I want to see my mom, as well. She’s older. She’s 85 and I want to make sure I was safe for her, to just be around her,” said Doffney.

Monday was the first day all adults in Texas were eligible for the vaccine.

“It’s just for my safety and my grandma’s safety. I care about her so much and don’t want to be the reason why something happens to her,” said Joselyne Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is 19 years old and she’s getting vaccinated for her family.

“I go to school, I work and all that and I put myself at risk. I don’t want to put my family at risk,” said Gonzalez.
