Police identify person killed in Bryan shooting, give update on injured victims

BRYAN, Texas – One person was killed and five people were wounded Thursday in a shooting at a cabinet-making business in Bryan, Texas, police said.

On Friday, police identified the person killed as 40-year-old Timothy Smith. According to the Bryan Police Department, Smith was a Bryan resident. They also gave an update on the four victims who were injured, saying two were in stable condition, one was in critical but stable condition, and another was treated and released on Thursday.

The suspect was taken into custody Thursday after the shooting. Bryan police identified him as 27-year-old Larry Bollin of Grimes County. Bollin has since been charged with murder and five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Brazos County Jail. He is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.

Police said four of the five victims who were shot at the business are in critical condition. One person who was shot at the original scene had non-life-threatening injuries. Another victim who was shot at a different location has been identified as a DPS Trooper. Officials said the trooper was shot while pursuing the suspect. Officials said he was taken to a hospital and remains in stable condition.

Bryan Police Chief Eric Buske told reporters he believes Bollin is an employee at the Kent Moore Cabinets location. Police said they believed the suspect used a handgun.

By the time officers arrived, the Bollin was gone, Buske said. The shooting took place around 2:30 p.m. in the bays in a plant where employees make cabinets.

Employees were being interviewed, Bryan Police Lt. Jason James said earlier, and witnesses had identified a suspect.

“At this site, when law enforcement showed up, it was already over with,” James said.

Around 3:30 p.m., DPS said multiple law enforcement agencies were trying to arrest Bollin in Iola, Texas. DPS said as the trooper pursued the suspect on FM 39, he was shot and flown to St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. Around 4:45 p.m., DPS said the suspect was spotted in Bedias, Texas, and taken into custody.

Investigators are still trying to determine the motive for the attack, authorities said.

Employee, Marc Barron, said he saw the shooter often at work and described him as quiet and that no one expected this could happen.

“Nobody expected for this stuff to happen you see him every day...quiet... offering to buy people food,” Barron said.

Barron described the scene.

“Gunshots. slamming, running, people falling, screaming,” Barron said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sent agents and dogs to the shooting scene, said spokesman Deon Washington. Police asked people to stay away from the business during the investigation.

Bryan is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Houston and is near Texas A&M University. With more than 86,000 residents, it is the seat of Brazos County.

A person who answered the phone at Kent Moore Cabinets’ headquarters in Bryan said she couldn’t provide any information on the shooting. The company, which makes custom cabinets, has design centers in nearly a dozen Texas cities and employs more than 600 people, according to its website.

The cabinet company released the following statement in wake of the shooting:

“I have been working closely with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers as they assist local law enforcement on a swift response to this criminal act. Their efforts led to the arrest of the shooting suspect. The state will assist in any way needed to help prosecute the suspect. Cecilia and I are praying for the victims and their families and for the law enforcement officer injured while apprehending the suspect.”
