Fixes for your face: How to turn back the clock on skin damage

If the skin on your face makes you look older than you really are, there may be a few factors at play. The good news is there are also a few fixes.

We connected with a Houston-area dermatologist and our own KPRC 2 News Anchor Dominique Sachse to face the facts about your skin and aging.

Three factors that can cause you to look older

#1 - The Sun

Let’s get the most obvious factor out of the way first. The sun may give you a nice glow to start but over time, the results will be less than rosy.

“If you compare skin on your face to the skin on your buttocks area or your abdomen area…that skin, should be exactly the same,” said Dr. Marjory Nigro, a dermatologist.

No matter your skincare budget, Dr. Nigro and Dominique agree, the one beauty item you should always use is a good sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30.

#2 - Nicotine

Nicotine is a definite no-no if you want healthier, younger skin. Nicotine impacts blood vessels and kills collagen.

Dr. Nigro shared “...less blood to the skin does not help your collagen and your collagen fibers die faster.”

That will make you look older.

#3 - Skin Neglect

Dr. Nigro says skin neglect can come from not knowing the right products to use or abusing your skin with excessive scrubbing. Grabbing products that are too harsh can also irritate or burn your skin causing more harm than good.

Turn back the clock

Dominique shared her must-haves for anti-aging and sun damage.

She said products with glycolic acid and vitamin A, also known as Retin-A can help.

“Look for products that have niacinamide in them,” added Dominique. “They will also help with dark spots and discoloration.”

For sunspots, Dominique has a suggestion too...

“A great place to start is Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a natural skin brightener.”

She says it comes in creams and serums and one of her favorites is available at your local drug store and it’s called Bliss Bright Idea Vitamin C & Tri-Peptide Collagen

“This is a collagen producer as well,” said Dominique. “It will also brighten the skin as well, so you can also get something that’s very mindful of the budget.”
