Worker who died in industrial accident at Margaritaville Resort near Lake Conroe identified

MONTGOMERY COUNTY – A 25-year-old worker was killed and another worker was injured while doing electrical work at the Margaritaville Lake Resort, Conroe Fire Department said last Thursday.

On Monday, the deceased worker was identified as Garrett Townes of Cold Springs, Texas.

Conroe and Montgomery County Fire Departments responded to the incident around 3 p.m. near the main entrance at the resort hotel, located at 600 Margaritaville Park Way on Lake Conroe.

Conroe police said the second worker, who hasn’t been named for privacy reasons, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said a third worker who was standing next to the men during the incident was not injured.

The resort was left without power and has been closed as of Friday, officials said. Officers said it could take days for crews to determine if the area is safe for guests.

“They just said that there’s some kind of electrical problem and just to stay outside,” said Marsha McCuller, a resort guest. “They moved us all along and then we just waited for a long time and all the emergency vehicles showed up.”

Police said the resort was closed at the recommendation of Entergy.

“They just said there was an accident and that the lights are out, and so the power’s out, so they don’t know when it’s going to come back so they recommend that people check out,” said Neda Malkani, a guest.

Margaritaville released the following statement regarding the incident:

“The team at Margaritaville Lake Resort, Lake Conroe | Houston extends its thoughts and prayers to those involved in today’s unfortunate accident. Shortly after 3 p.m., two contractors of our energy provider were performing electrical work on property when an incident occurred. Police, fire, and emergency medical teams immediately responded to the scene. Out of respect for the individuals and their families, any questions should be referred to the local authorities. As a result of the incident, there is currently no power at the resort.”

Entergy released the following statement:

“Entergy Texas extends its deepest condolences to the family of the individual who died yesterday. Any specific questions regarding the accident should be directed to his employer. Entergy Texas is continuing to cooperate with local law enforcement and other entities involved in the accident investigation. Power to the surrounding area was largely restored yesterday.”
