George Floyd’s 4-year-old niece shot after someone fired several shots into Houston apartment, family says

HPD launches investigation into delayed response time

HOUSTON – George Floyd’s four-year-old niece was shot on Saturday at her home on Houston’s south side, and authorities are trying to find the person or people who fired multiple times into the apartment.

The shooting happened in the 3300 block of Yellowstone Boulevard about 2:55 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Four adults and two children – including Arianna Delane who was shot – were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. The girl was shot in the torso. Her dad says she suffered from a punctured liver, lung, and had several broken ribs.

“My daughter jumped up and said she had been hit,” Arianna’s father Derrick Delane said. “I [saw] the blood, the bleeding, and I grabbed her.”

He said his wife drove them to the hospital. Arianna survived the shooting and surgery.

“She’s healing very fast. The last time I checked on her she was breathing on her own. She was doing really great,” Derrick said.

On Tuesday, HPD Chief Troy Finner released the following statement in regards to the shooting:

“The investigation into the senseless shooting of the 4-year-old female at 3322 Yellowstone Boulevard on Saturday morning (January 1) continues to move forward. I am aware and have concerns regarding the delayed response time in this incident and have initiated an Internal Affairs Investigation. I ask the city to continue to pray for the child’s full recovery and assist in providing information that would lead to the arrest of the suspect or suspects responsible.”

Police said there is no suspect description or motive in the shooting. Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with Delane’s medical expenses.
