HOUSTON – One suspect was injured and another was arrested after a chase ended in an officer-involved shooting in southwest Houston early Monday, police say.
The injured suspect, Darius Emon Hicks, 21, has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and evading arrest. A booking photo of Hicks, who is hospitalized, is not available at this time.
The other suspect, Tra Sean Scott, 20, has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest. A booking photo of Scott was released.
What happened
According to J. Jones with HPD, shortly around midnight, officers spotted a vehicle in the 5800 block of Bellaire Boulevard that was reported stolen. As the driver, identified as Scott, pulled over, he and Hicks ran from the vehicle.
Officers chased the suspects and could see Hicks with a pistol in his hand, police said. The officer reportedly felt threatened and shot the armed suspect at least once in the leg.
Paramedics were called to give medical attention to the wounded suspect. He was taken to a hospital where he remains in stable condition.
Scott was later found and arrested.
Four other suspects in the vehicle were detained, questioned and released without charges
No officers were injured in the shooting.
Jones said the officer who fired his weapon is an 11-year veteran with HPD.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
