What happened
The crash happened at approximately 10:15 p.m. in the 11500 block of U.S. Highway 90.
According to Houston police, the 22-year-old victim was a passenger in a maroon Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck traveling southbound. The preliminary investigation and evidence from the scene indicated the pickup truck appeared to have been struck by a gray Chevrolet Equinox, also traveling southbound, police said.
Police said the impact caused the pickup truck to veer off the road, strike a median pillar and continue off the roadway to a grassy area. Paramedics pronounced the 22-year-old dead at the scene.
Contreras and the driver of the Dodge Ram were taken to area hospitals.
Police said Contreras was determined to be impaired and was then charged.
