Security officer shoots suspect who attempted break-in at Federal Courthouse in downtown Houston

HOUSTON – A suspect has been shot by a security guard after breaking into a building in downtown Houston Thursday morning.

Houston police responded to reports of a shooting at 700 Louisiana Street around 6 a.m.

Officers said a man, who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, attempted to break into the Federal Courthouse located on Rusk Street, but was stopped by three security guards working at the building.

When the security guards tried to detain the suspect, officers said he fled the scene and went across the street to a building located at 700 Louisiana and busted a window with a steel pipe, making entry.

Once inside, the suspect was cornered into a conference room, located on the first floor, by the three security guards. The guards attempted to detain the man again, but he struck one of them with the pipe.

The suspect was then shot in the leg by one of the security guards. He was transported to Ben Taub Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the security guards suffered minor injuries from being hit with the pipe, but the other two had no injuries.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, and it’s unclear what charges he will face.
