HOUSTON – Fireworks are exciting for humans, but the loud noises can easily scare our pets.
BARC Houston says it’s easy for pets to runaway and get lost during loud celebrations.
Here are some tips to keep them safe:
1. Update IDs and microchips
It’s better to be on the safe side and keep their information current. All pets four months or older in the city of Houston must be microchipped, if not pet owners could face up to a $500 fine.
If your pet is too young to be microchipped, collars and tags are helpful, according to the City of Houston’s website.

2. Bring your pets inside
If your pets are used to spending their time outside enjoying the Houston weather, give them a break and bring them indoors.
“When animals are scared, they don’t act like they normally do,” Cory Stottlemyer, deputy shelter director of BARC said.
Even if your house is surrounded by high fences, you will surprised how high dogs and cats will jump when they are afraid.

3. Create an in-door plan
For animals who are used to being inside homes, Stottlemyer recommends keeping dogs in a separate room so they don’t get overwhelmed.
“One of our dogs, we put in a kennel because she tends to be a chewer,” Stottlemyer told KPRC 2+. “One of our older dogs is losing his hearing, so he is fine,” he joked.
Make sure dogs and cats have their favorite toys and enough food and water. If you are planning to welcome guests in your home, ask them to keep doors closed. Cats and dogs are fast when they are scared.
4. Make sure your pets get along
If you have an indoor cat and plan to bring in an outdoor dog, keep them in separate areas.
“You want to avoid any friction between them, or any other stressor,” he said.
