HOUSTON – A suspect accused of injuring a 7-year-old in a road rage shooting in southeast Houston previously told police he did not know anything about the incident, court documents revealed.

He was previously stopped during a traffic stop in July 2023. An officer also called him last year about the road rage shooting, and he told them he did not know anything about it, court documents stated.

What happened

On July 9, 2023, Rosmeri Sabio had been stopped at a traffic light and scrolling on her phone, then she heard honking. She thought the light had just turned green because a car was still next to her at the traffic signal.

She moved to the left lane to get out of the car’s way and changed lanes several times, but the car kept following her, according to court document.

A witness said Burns also flicked Sabio off.

Sabio was in the left lane, when Burns pulled up next to her and started shooting at her car.

Her 7-year-old daughter was shot in the back right passenger seat. She yelled and had wounds in her leg and thigh.

Burns then sped away and zig zagged down the street, court documents said.

A witness later told police Burns sped in front of Sabio’s car and flicked her off. They kept driving in front of each other.

The witness said she was unsure if Sabio was trying to avoid him because they were driving fast, authorities said.

Police are still looking for Burns.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Burns is urged to contact the HPD Major Assaults and Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or speak anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS
