‘Tragic scene:’ Toddler dies after being struck by vehicle in parking lot of northwest Houston hotel

HOUSTON – A 19-month-old girl has died after being hit by a vehicle in the parking lot of a northwest Houston hotel Tuesday.

The Houston Police Department said it happened in the 5900 block of Guhn Road at around 6:35 p.m.

According to Commander Michael Chaney with HPD, a driver of a gray Chevrolet Impala was entering the parking lot of the HomeTowne Studios at the location.

Investigators learned that two women were bringing children down a flight of stairs at the complex when one of the women dropped a cellphone. As the woman went to get the phone, one of the children continued walking and went into the parking lot. At that time, the driver of the Impala struck the child, police said.

“They were driving through the parking lot and they turned around the corner to go to the back side of the parking lot. As they turned to go to the back side of the parking lot, unbeknownst to them there was a child playing in the parking lot and the driver struck the child,” Chaney said.

Chaney said the 29-year-old female driver felt a bump and got out to see what they had hit. When they got out, they saw the child on the ground. The driver rendered aid to the child until paramedics arrived.

The child was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Chaney said the driver showed no signs of intoxication.

At this time, no charges have been filed. The investigation is continuing.

“Very sad, exactly the facts that led up to it, we’re still working on that, but definitely prayers to the family, and a overall tragic scene,” Chaney said.
