HOUSTON – The child victim in the Lakewood Church shooting is fighting for his life and the second victim has been released from the hospital, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police identified the suspect as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, of Conroe during a news conference on Monday. Investigators found Moreno had previous mental health problems.
Moreno went into the church through the left side with an AR-15 rifle, a bag with another gun, and her 7-year-old child.
The child is critically injured after being shot in the head and has not been identified. An off-duty Houston police officer and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission officer were at the church and confronted Moreno. It is unclear if the child was shot in the process or by the suspect.
The suspect’s gun had a sticker with the word “Palestine” on it. Investigators say they found antisemitic writings at Moreno’s home, but added it is still too early to discuss a motive behind Sunday’s shooting at the mega-church.
Moreno had several aliases, and she got into a family dispute with her ex-husband and his family, and some of them are Jewish, according to investigators.
Police say she acted alone and that there are no signs this is part of a larger incident.
A 57-year-old man was injured at the church, but has since been released from the hospital.
