That statement from the family’s attorney, Alex Farias-Sorrels, goes on to say, “Her memory will last forever. Their hope is that the actions they’ve taken so far, and will take in the future, to seek justice for Evelyn will lead to changes in the ride-sharing industry.”

The crash happened Sunday, March 3, when Evelyn was in the backseat of an Uber minivan with her parents. The van was hit from behind, investigators believe, by a Ford F-350 pickup that then took off.

The Uber driver followed the pickup down the road into a parking lot and then onto the North Freeway service road. The two cars crashed again near West Gulf Bank Road and Sweetwater Lane in north Houston and that crash sent the minivan slamming into a traffic control box.

Evelyn and her dad were both hurt. She was taken to a local emergency room by a witness and then rushed to Texas Children’s Hospital where she died eight days later.

The pickup truck driver, who police say showed signs of intoxication, left the scene and was stopped by a witness. The driver consented to a blood draw, but police haven’t given out the results of that test.

No one has been charged in the crash and police say they have conflicting statements by both parties. The case now goes to a grand jury for review.
