A Montgomery County man’s jealous rage has now led to a 50-year prison sentence after a jury found him guilty of assault and family violence for strangling his girlfriend. She survived.

Lauro Eluid Salinas, 50, was sentenced to 50 years in prison by 435th District Court Judge John C. Hafley.

According to court reports, Montgomery County prosecutors Jamie Sulla and Taylor Vanegas presented evidence that in June of 2022, Salinas became jealous when his girlfriend of two years spoke to an Uber driver. When they arrived home, Salinas began hitting her in the face, knocking her to the ground and then wrapped his hands around her neck until she was unconscious.

Testimony revealed Salinas also dragged his girlfriend across the concrete into the yard, causing additional injuries to her arm and shoulder. The assault continued until the victim’s 8-year-old son began yelling at Salinas to stop hurting his mom.

“Laura Salinas is a violent man committed to violent acts, particularly against women,” District Attorney Brett Ligon said in a press release. “Such men have no place among us, and we are grateful to the jury and the judge that Salinas will now serve a lengthy prison sentence.”

Salinas got 50 years because he’d been sentenced for similar crimes in the previous 12 months. Salinas had been sent to prison twice within that period for assaulting family members and possession of marijuana, increasing his punishment range to 25 years to life in prison.

“Lauro Salinas is a dangerous man who can no longer victimize women. Thanks to the strength and courage of the survivor, the dedicated work of law enforcement, and the care provided by EMS and medical personnel, our county is safer today than it was yesterday,” Sulla said in a press release.
