At least 2 dead after bus carrying 44 preschool students crashes into concrete truck in Bastrop County

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas – A school bus crash has left two people dead and many injured on Friday afternoon in Bastrop County, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.

ATCEMS and emergency officials responded to the crash around 2:17 p.m. on 2751 W. SH 21, which is near Caldwell Road, medics told KXAN News.

At least 50 people were involved in the rollover crash. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office said on social media SH 21 was shut down due to a crash with “multiple” deaths. At least two deaths have been reported.

At least one of those killed was a child, per KXAN.

The number of injuries have not been disclosed.

What happened

A Hays Consolidated Independent School District bus, carrying Tom Green Elementary preschool students, collided with a concrete truck near Mustang Ridge, the Texas Department of Public Safety told KXAN.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., medics said two Travis County STARflight helicopters arrived on the scene to transport four people. Additionally, two patients were taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center by ATCEMS.

Other patients were transported by other agencies as well, medics said.

In a news release from Hays CISD, the students were returning from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo.

A total of 44 students and 11 adults were on the bus, KXAN reports. The district said parents of students who were on the bus were “notified directly from the campus.” At this time, “the district is in the process of conducting reunification.”
