Our next rain chances look to arrive past Memorial Day next week, but until that time expect more of the same in terms of heat.
Here’s how it looks.
Memorial Day climatology
First, a look at some extremes we have experienced on Memorial Day, which is next Monday.
Our hottest recorded Memorial Day was in 2004, where Houston hit 96 degrees. The forecast right now is for Houston to tie this record.
The coolest Memorial Day was in 1947, where Houston only hit 60 degrees. Our wettest Memorial Day was in 2015, where Houston recorded 4.34 inches of rain.
Memorial Day forecast
Leading up to Memorial Day, expect high temperatures to continue to rise, peaking on Sunday and Monday in the mid-90s.
Memorial Day in Houston will start off warm, 80 degrees at 8 a.m. These temperatures will rise before topping out at 96 degrees in the mid to late afternoon. If we hit this, it will tie the 2004 record and there is the potential we could even break the record.
If you are planning to hit the beaches in Galveston on Memorial Day, expect it to be hot and humid. It will be a few degrees cooler near the water, but still hot. Expect temperatures to top out near 90 degrees, with feels like temperatures above 100 degrees.
Extended forecast
Past Memorial Day, we will see increasing rain chances into the latter half of next week. Right now, our peak rain chances look to be on Thursday where we have a 40 percent chance of rain. These chances will be refined the closer we get. The temperatures may drop a few degrees with those rain chances, but it is still going to be quite warm.
