The Louisiana native was swimming with four others near the Galveston Historic Pleasure Pier around 12:15 p.m., when the group was caught in a strong current near the area.
According to the Galveston Island Beach Patrol, there were 4,397 preventative actions taken, including moving people from potential danger, as well as five rescues, nine lost children reunited, and nine medical responses.
Lifeguards noticed the group straying away from the shore and attempted to whistle them to return, but the group couldn’t hear the whistles.
The lifeguards sprang into action and were able to pull the swimmers back to the shore. However, one member of the group was missing.
After a search, Acevedo was found face-down in the water near the pier. CPR was performed at the shore and continued as he was rushed to the hospital, but the efforts proved futile.

“Galveston’s is experiencing red flag condition, so adults who are good swimmers shouldn’t go out deeper than their waist. Children and non-swimmers should stay out of the water,” Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis said.
