Here are some tips from Consumer Reports to help safeguard your home:

  • Protect your home from additional water: Use sandbags (30 to 50 pounds each) as flood barriers to prevent water from entering your home.
  • Prepare busted windows: Use thick plastic sheets (4 to 6 mm) and duct tape to cover broken windows and doors.
  • Clear your yard: Remove furniture, grills, bikes, and chairs from your yard. High winds can turn these items into projectiles, potentially breaking your windows.
  • Turn off utilities: Depending on the severity of the storm or the damage, you may need to turn off your utilities to prevent further hazards.
  • Tree maintenance: If you have a tree that could cause damage during a storm, it’s important to call a tree company to have it cut down or trimmed.
