A neighborly dispute in east Houston turned violent Friday night when a 73-year-old man shot his 80-year-old neighbor.
According to police, at 8:30 p.m. on the 1500 block of Demaree Ln., an 80-year-old man was rummaging through items under his neighbor’s carport, a recurring issue that had previously ended without violence. Hearing the commotion, the 73-year-old neighbor went outside and was confronted by the 80-year-old swinging a cane at him. In response, the 73-year-old shot him with a small pistol.

Both men returned to their homes and called the police. The 80-year-old man is expected to recover.
The 73-year-old is cooperating with authorities, and the case will be referred to the district attorney’s office to determine if charges will be filed.
“Right now, the 73-year-old is cooperating, being honest about everything that occurred,” HPD’s Lt. Wilkins said. “Everything is being referred to the DA’s office, and they’re just working through the process to see if they are going to file any charges on anyone right now, so hopefully this won’t happen again.”
